In this talk I will discuss some elements of an interdisciplinary framework for research on human interaction. The ideas arise from a long-term research project called ‘Interactional Foundations of Language’ at the Max Planck Institute in Nijmegen. This talk will focus on two central elements of the framework: 1. Enchrony, a temporal-causal perspective that focuses on communicative moves as part of ‘contingent sequence’ (this perspective takes a place alongside others such as phylogeny, ontogeny, diachrony, and synchrony); 2. Agency, the composite capacities that individuals have for controlling and deploying communicative and other effective behaviour; here, I focus on the distributed nature of agency, building on Goffman’s insights about speakerhood.

Tid: onsdag 2. februar kl. 14.15-15.30
